My Superman

When I say Superman, you might think that this is to describe someone how is strong n a hero who always saves people's life? But you are wrong. My 'Superman' is someone who is very weak and need people to save him. Even though he is weak, but he has a strong determination. When he falls down, he will never give up and try hard to stand on his own feet again. He is no other than my beloved grandfather.

He was admitted to the hospital on 13 August 2007. The doctor said he needs to undergo a minor operation. The operation was successful. All of us were relieved. None of us ever thought anything bad will happen until the next morning when my grandfather unexpectedly got stroke. He can't even move his body nor speak a single word. He was in unconsciousness that time and the doctor advised every one of us to stay beside my grandfather all the time if possible because we might lose him anytime.

When I got that news, I rushed back to Melaka. The moment I reached the hospital, I directly went to see him. It's heartbreaking to see my grandfather in that condition. He looked very skinny. To make the matter worse, my grandmother was crying too. Never in my live that I see my grandmother who is so tough will break down and cry. I can only hope for miracle to happen, pray for god to save my grandfather.

I will never forget what happened next. My grandfather’s heart beat stopped suddenly. All of us were so panicked. We called for nurses and doctor. We keep on shouting grandfather’s name. I guess, he was struggling hard, he don wan to leave us, yet! It was that time his heart start beating again… he opened his eyes and then spoke to us. To our surprise he can move his body back. No one can explain how and why. This is really a MIRACLE…

Well, the bad dream is not ending yet. He is still in a critical status. The doctor said my grandfather cannot have fever because this will cause infection in his lung. So, to avoid this, he needs to do phlegm suction this is really painful and hurt the throat. He needs to do the suction frequently. It’s so heart aching to see this. We start to question, is it better that god end his live earlier so that he won’t suffer anymore? Every time the nurse come in to do the suction, we all tried to hold back the tears and be strong hoping that this is the best way for him. We kept on giving grandfather the motivation to stand strong. After the suction, he will feel pain until tears roll down his cheek. But he never thought of giving up. Because he knows 40 of us (his wife, sons, daughters, in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren) are always by his side and hoping that he will recover.

Finally, he did make it. He is getting better each day. And today is the day…the day he discharges from the hospital after spending 8 days there. 20 august 2007- the day to remember.
